Our program is founded on cooperative, mutually beneficial partnerships with Indigenous communities including Aurukun, Yarrabah, Torres Strait, Bamaga, Weipa, Mapoon and Hope Vale and organisations including the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) and the Cape York Institute for Leadership and Policy (CYLP).
A philosophical approach sees a strong focus emerge on a boy’s social and character development. These elements are embedded into the program and our day-to-day practices as we aim to create lifelong sustainable change for Indigenous students and their communities.
A team of professionals are on hand to ensure a smooth transition and to provide specialised support. The program incorporates multi-layered mechanisms to assist with each boy’s transition and to encourage optimum student and community engagement.
Within the College itself we promote an awareness of indigenous culture and facilitate leadership development for students. All boys are actively involved in increasing awareness and appreciation for Indigenous Australians and an emphasis is placed on ensuring Indigenous students maintain their connection to country.
Each year a number of cultural events are held throughout the year including a Welcome to Country for new students and families, annual dinner in line with NAIDOC Week, (National Aboriginies and Islanders Day Observance Committee) and recognition of national events including Sorry Day. Local elders are also called upon and regularly visit the College.
