Music is an integral component of the Junior School curriculum offered from Prep right through to Year 6. Evidence also shows that music can help build confidence and self-esteem, foster the development of social and interpersonal skills and serve to develop aspects of the brain that other subjects don’t address.
Music Every Day Program
In 2011 the College introduced the Music Every Day program which sees Prep, Years 1, 2 and 3 students partake in music lessons on a daily basis. BBC is one of only a few schools in Brisbane to offer this type of program as part of the standard curriculum.
Based on the world-renowned Kodály philosophy, named after Hungarian composer and educator Zoltan Kodály, the program aims to foster a life-long love of music. Kodály believed music to be an integral part of the education of every child; not to make them professional musicians but to complete them as people.
Academic Classroom Music
Students in Years 4 to 6 receive one Academic Classroom Music lesson per week with a music specialist. Boys experience and learn about music through a sequential aural-vocal approach.
Classroom Choral and Instrumental Music
In addition to Academic Classroom Music, boys also receive one classroom choral or instrumental lesson. At the end of each semester, the Junior School comes together in a concert to showcase their musical achievement.
Class Instrumental Program
Students from Years 4 to 6 are given the opportunity to experience music by learning an instrument, with each student tested aurally and allocated an orchestral based instrument.
